Registration now open for Northeast Kingdom Food System Summit!
The Northeast Kingdom Food System Plan Summit is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 at Sterling College in Craftsbury Common. The daylong Summit will review the changes in our local food system in the past 5 years and engage attendees around specific goals to help set priorities for the future. The Summit will include topics on distribution and aggregation of local products, farmland access, economic and community development, as well as food access and justice. The Summit will feed into an update of the Northeast Kingdom Food System Plan, originally written in 2011. Read More
Working Lands Enterprise Board Releases Annual Report Demonstrating Cumulative Impacts
Since its inception in 2012, the Working Lands Enterprise Board (WLEB) has invested over $3.1 million dollars in 112 projects impacting every county of the state, leveraging just under $5 million in additional funds. Secretaries of Agriculture, Natural Resources Submit Joint Interim Report on Subsurface Agricultural Tile Drainage
Vermont’s Secretary of Agriculture, Chuck Ross, and Vermont’s Secretary of Natural Resources, Deb Markowitz, jointly submitted the interim report on subsurface agricultural tile drainage to the Vermont General Assembly. The Subsurface Tile Drainage Interim Report is a summary of the progress the two agencies have made in preparing a final report on tile drainage, which is due to the Legislature in January, 2017. Vermont Dairy Co-op First to Adopt New Technology to Improve Value of Milk & Farm Management Practices
The St. Albans Cooperative Creamery is the first dairy co-op in the nation to provide new information to farmers about the fatty acids that make up the milk fat in their cow’s milk. Local researchers found a direct correlation between the fat content in milk and farm management practices – this information will allow farmers to improve the way they feed and manage their cows as well as earn a higher pay for their milk. A core goal of Sodexo's Vermont First commitment is to create a local food strategic purchasing model that can be replicated in other states and regions. Just under a year since Annie Rowell began as the Vermont First Coordinator, we are excited to see the model taking hold in a fellow New England state – Maine. Below is the recent announcement about the hire of the new Maine Course Director, Maeve McInnis. Annie is looking forward to working closely with her new Maine counterpart to continue to build a robust and innovative local purchasing model.
