The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) welcomes applications for the 2019 Vermont Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. This funding opportunity will provide awards for projects that strengthen Vermont specialty crop industries. Awarded projects will enhance the competitiveness of Vermont specialty crops defined as: fruits and tree nuts; vegetables; culinary herbs, spices, medicinal plants; nursery, floriculture, horticulture, Christmas trees; honey, hops, maple syrup; and mushrooms.

Government Shutdown Puts 3SquaresVT Benefits at Risk: Some Participants Need to Take Immediate Action to Receive February Benefits
The partial federal government shutdown is putting thousands of Vermonters at risk of hunger, and some who receive 3SquaresVT (known nationally as SNAP) need to take immediate action in order to receive their food benefits for February. With the end of the shutdown still uncertain, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), one of the federal agencies impacted by the shutdown, has announced its plan to temporarily fund SNAP by issuing February benefits early. States have until January 20th to request and implement an early issuance of SNAP benefits for February.

$90,000 Now Available for Farming Sustainability and Food Safety Projects
December 10, 2018 / Montpelier, VT – The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets released two Request for Proposals (RFPs) today. VAAFM is pleased to announce the availability of up to $90,000 of funding from these two programs to assist eligible Vermont farmers and food businesses to make upgrades to their operations and improve the sustainability of their businesses. The application period for both grant programs will be open from Monday, January 7th, 2019 until Thursday, January 31st, 2019 at 12:00pm (noon). Awards will range from $2,000 to $5,000.

Local food consumption and job numbers surpass 2020 targets; Vermont’s Farm to Plate Network Annual Gathering identifies more work to be done
Over 250 members of the Vermont Farm to Plate Network convened November 1-2, 2018 at the eighth annual Farm to Plate Gathering in Killington where it was announced that local food and beverage consumption in 2017 by Vermonters increased to 12.9 percent, surpassing a 2020 target of 10 percent.
