Rural Vermont hosts "Farmers Tell Their Stories" - April 8th, MONTPELIER
To honor a rich and gutsy thirty year history and to connect the dots between good public policy and good food, Rural Vermont is launching a year-long series of “Farmers Tell Their Stories” events. The first event is at the Capital City Grange in Montpelier on April 8th. Farmers and friends will take the stage and share both personal and collective experiences through story, poetry, song, and skits. Potluck at 5:30, Annual Meeting at 6:30, Storytelling at 7:30. Twenty-two States Pass Farm to School Legislation in 2014
Twenty-two states passed 41 farm to school-supportive bills and resolutions in 2014, a 64 percent increase over 2013, according to a report released today by the National Farm to School Network. The State Farm to School Legislative Survey: 2002-2014, prepared by researchers at Vermont Law School's Center for Agriculture and Food Systems, is a comprehensive review of state-level farm to school policies, analysis of national trends, and advocacy guide for those working to advance the farm to school movement across the country. New Resource Available to help Food Hubs Support Sustainable Farm to School Programs
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) is pleased to announce the publication of a new resource, Using Food Hubs to Create Sustainable Farm to School Programs (available here), which explores the key roles that Food Hubs can play in the development, support, and maintenance of successful Farm to School (FTS) programs. While Food Hubs remain a relatively new and evolving concept within the national food movement, Vermont is home to over a dozen Food Hubs, whose missions range from the aggregation, processing, and distribution of locally made foods, to consumer education, to farmer/producer technical assistance. Ready, set, chop! On Saturday, March 21, 65 middle and high school teams will compete in the state’s eighth annual Junior Iron Chef VT. This local foods cooking challenge empowers youth to connect with where food comes from, healthy eating, and from-scratch cooking.
