NOFA Vermont seeks workshop proposals for the 34th Annual Winter Conference
The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA Vermont) is accepting workshop proposals for its 34th Annual Winter Conference. Proposals will be accepted until September 18th, 2015. The event is Vermont’s largest agricultural conference, bringing together more than 1,500 farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, educators, policy makers and consumers for three days of workshops, networking sessions, meals and celebration. The Food and Farm Initiative of the Vermont Community Foundation Awards More Than $500,000 in Grants to Connect More Vermonters with Healthy, Local Food
The Food and Farm Initiative of the Vermont Community Foundation has awarded 12 grants totaling more than $500,000 to continue its support of local and statewide efforts to help connect Vermont families of all incomes with local food. Since its launch in 2012, the initiative has awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to organizations striving to solve food insecurity in Vermont while strengthening the state’s local food system. The level of grantmaking in this most recent round was made possible thanks to the partnership of over 30 donors including 16 Foundation fundholders and the High Meadows Fund, which is a part of the Community Foundation. More than forty purveyors of local food convened on the Statehouse lawn today as part of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets’ (VAAFM) first ever summer Buy Local Market. The event, which coincides with National Farmers’ Market Week and Vermont Open Farm Week, was organized by VAAFM as part of the State’s Local Food Wellness and Consumer Awareness Initiative, in partnership with the Capital City Farmers’ Market and The Northeast Organic Farming Association of VT (NOFA-VT). State Veterinarians encourage poultry producers and enthusiasts to prepare for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), expected to impact the East Coast fall of 2015 or spring of 2016.
Vermont State Veterinarian, Dr. Kristin Haas, is encouraging poultry owners, producers and enthusiasts to prepare for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which is expected to impact the East Coast in the fall of this year or spring of 2016. Since December 2014, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed the presence of HPAI on more than 200 properties, impacting almost 50 million commercial and backyard birds. While the HPAI outbreak has not yet been identified in Vermont, poultry producers should be familiar with the disease, how it is spread, and preparedness efforts that they can engage in now.
