The Campus Kitchens Project is a nationally recognized, student-run nonprofit that recovers food locally to meet hunger and nutritional needs of the community. With the help of various partners and dedicated volunteers, Campus Kitchens Project club at the University of Vermont provides free meals each week using rescued food and teaches nutrition courses through the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf (CEFS).

“Campus Kitchens fills a huge need in our community by preparing the only meal that is available here on Sundays,” said Brad Docheff, Operations Manager of CEFS. “The funds raised at this event have a measurable impact on the fifty or more clients they serve each week.”

For the last eight years during Earth Week, Campus Kitchens has hosted Battle of the Campus Chefsin collaboration with UVM Dining. All proceeds benefit the CEFS and the event is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year.  Chefs from each dining hall on campus partner with a student club and together make one dish per team that showcases the chef’s talents and dedication to sustainable food. Dishes are judged on taste, presentation and use of Real Food.

Real Food is defined as food that is local, ecologically sound, humane and/or fair trade. All dishes must contain a minimum of 20% Real Food to raise awareness about UVM’s Real Food Campus Commitment to serve 20% Real Food campus-wide by 2020.

Alice Levitt of the former Seven Days blog, Alice Eats, has called the event, “one of Vermont’s most impressive displays of culinary skill. Seriously.”

We invite you to join us for this year’s event; enjoy unlimited tastings of creative, sustainable dishes while celebrating The Campus Kitchens Project’s efforts to strengthen bodies, empower minds and build communities.

Battle of the Campus Chefs will take place on April 20th from 7-9pm in the Grand Maple Ballroom of the Davis Center at 590 Main Street, Burlington.
