Revolutionary Chef and Restaurateur Alice Waters to Speak at Sterling College

March 10, 2014 • Craftsbury Common, VT—The Vermont’s Table Speaker Series at Sterling College is proud to announce that renowned author, activist, restaurateur, and chef Alice Waters will be speaking at the environmentally-based college. Her talk will be given on Thursday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m. in Dunbar Hall.

Waters is an American pioneer of a culinary philosophy that maintains that cooking should be based on the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients that are produced sustainably and locally. 60 Minutes has called her “the mother of slow food.” She is a passionate advocate for a food economy she describes as “good, clean, and fair.”

“We’re  excited to have Ms. Waters here, because of our pioneering role in sustainable food and agriculture education,” said President Matthew Derr. “We’ve been eating local food and advocating for sustainability since the 1970s, and we’re still a boot camp for change in our relationship to the natural world and a revolution in food systems today.”

Over the course of nearly forty years, Waters’ California restaurant, Chez Panisse, has helped create a community of local farmers and ranchers whose dedication to sustainable agriculture secures the restaurant a steady supply of fresh ingredients. In 1996, Waters’s commitment to education led to the creation of The Edible Schoolyard at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School. The success of The Edible Schoolyard led to the School Lunch Initiative, whose national agenda advocates for a nutritious daily lunch and gardening experience into the academic curriculum of all public schools in the United States.

Waters is the author of eight books, including The Art of Simple Food, In the Green Kitchen, The Art of Simple Food II, and Recipes and Lessons from a Delicious Cooking Revolution.
