Position Description
The VAAFM Apiary Program is seeking a qualified candidate to assist with the duties of the Apiary Inspection Program. Primary duties include inspecting hives for regulated diseases, pests, and parasites, and light office work. This position will be field based, with travel required to all parts of the state.
The employee is expected to work approximately 20+ hours per week, for up to 1200 hours, beginning in late April or Early May.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A complete understanding of beekeeping management techniques and honey bee behavior
- Technical and working knowledge of honey bee pests and diseases
- Good communication skills, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with beekeepers
- Ability to work in a self-directed and proactive manner with minimal onsite supervision
- Ability to follow sampling protocols
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail
- Adaptability to frequent changes, delays, and unexpected events
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years of beekeeping experience or education. The candidate must possess a valid Vermont driver’s license and use their personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed). The candidate must be able to lift heavy equipment (>40 lb), bend frequently, and work under adverse conditions, such as heat, long days, and stinging insects. The candidate cannot have any known allergies to bee or wasp stings and must be willing to sign a waiver to that effect.
$22.74 per hour + mileage
